Windows recognizes the new hardware (Maxtor 98196H8) and the Device
Manager reports that it is working properly. How do I get it assigned to
a drive letter so it will show up in the "My Computer" window? Or do I
have to format it some other way first? Thanks for advice.

You can partition, format and assign it a drive letter in Disk Management.
Start|Run|diskmgmt.msc

I'm there now, thanks. The second drive shows up in the top pane of the
Disk Management screen, correct disk size, but with no drive letter
assigned. It says the drive is "healthy and "active" but the file system
type is blank. If I right click on the disk in the lower pane (Disk 2
Basic) all the options are greyed out except "delete partition" and help.

You might try deleting then recreating the partition.

Well, that's my last resort, but there are (were?) about 3000 mp3s on

that drive (rescued from his previous computer) that my son would hate
to lose. Thanks for the pointers anyway, they were very helpful. /Geoff

OK, you didn't mention this before and I assumed a new disk drive. Can you
move it back? Do the files appear? If so then possibly burn them to CD-Rom.

My son's old PC died -- high-end after market video card fan failed and
"cooked" it according to the repair guy. The MB was dead and the HD
wouldn't spin, just made a little faint door-buzzer sound every few
seconds, even in an external powered USB enclosure. Since his PC and
mine were identical Dell Dim 8100s with same HD ordered on the same day,
I swapped circuit boards from my HD to his and verified the HD board on
his was no good. With my circuit board on his HD body, installed in my
wife's PC as master on the second IDE channel (no slave), I get the
status as described in my earlier message. I'm trying to decide if there
is data on his drive and some circuit board incompatibility makes it
look empty, or if the Disk Management program is *actually* seeing an
empty HD. Apologies for not being more detailed above.

I found and downloaded the Maxtor diagnostic program, which repaired a
few "errors" (unspecified). Then, I was able to boot my PC with his
"repaired" HD installed as drive C. Found all 57gb of expected drive
contents undamaged and copied everything uneventfully off to a network
drive we use for family network data backups. All his personal files and
documents, including 3,247 music files, were undamaged. I guess I was
just dumb lucky with the circuit board swap trick. Thanks for your help.
