Win 2000 Pro settings for drill down in Explorer? |
|
|
While in Explorer on a Windows 2000 Professional PC I like to type the
folder name in and Explorer , and you will be will taken to that folder.
The problem is when there is a space in the name of the folder. I've
seen some computers accept the space to continue the drill down to the
right folder while others do not.
Is there some setting on Windows 2000 Professional that must be set to
accept spaces while typing on the key board to get to the correct
folder? Thanks!

Hi, Greg.
I haven't run Win2K since the day WinXP debuted, but this should work the
same in both Windows versions.
In a "DOS" window, you can use wildcards for some things and not others.
Where they work, they can save typing those long pathnames (whether they
include spaces or not), and remembering to enclose them in quotes.
From C:\, for example, to get into "C:\Program Files", just type cd pro*
But you can't just look into a subdirectory that way. You get only the
directory entry for the foldername itself if you type dir pro*
I can save a lot of typing with, for example, from C:\:
cd doc*\r*\my*\myp*\ad*\ot*
gets me to:
"C:\Documents and Settings\R. C. White\My Documents\My Pictures\Adobe\Other
Photos"
with many fewer keystrokes. Note that there are several "My *" folders
under "My Documents", but Myp* works, skipping the space.
I'm not sure WHERE you are trying to type in the folder name. When I try to
use this technique in the Address Bar of Windows Explorer, it doesn't work.
Nor in the Start | Run box. But I didn't try very hard; maybe there's a
trick that I don't know about.

Hi, Greg.
Please be more explicit. Do you mean WINDOWS Explorer? Or INTERNET
Explorer? (It's not your fault - or mine. Microsoft is the party who gave
them the confusingly-similar names. But simply "in Explorer" leaves us
wondering which one you mean.)
In Windows Explorer, I can't type anything into the Folders pane. I can
type into the Address line above that pane. As I said, my wildcard trick
doesn't work there, but it really doesn't need to. When I start to type in
"Program Files" (without the quotes), for example, following C:\ in the
Address Bar, a drop-down list appears; "Program Files" (without the quotes"
is the only item there, so I just select it. Or I can go to the end of the
line and type just "\m" (no quotes; either uppercase or lowercase works),
and the drop-down list appears with "Microsoft Bootvis" and "Microsoft
Office". I pick Office and drill down to the next level.
You may need to enable the AutoComplete feature. See this KB article:
Disabling or Enabling the AutoComplete or Inline AutoComplete Feature
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;237553
In the Folders pane, I see a list of folders, but no place to type in
anything (unless I press F2 to Rename a folder). To drill down, I just
click a subfolder in each folder as it appears.
