This is a press release from CEA-France (Commissariat de l'Energie

The management of the military applications of the CEA chooses, for its
program Simulation, the supercomputer designed by the BULL company.
The Management of the military applications of the CEA has just ordered
at the BULL company a supercomputer of a power higher than 60 téraflops
(sixty thousand billion operations a second).
Installed in the center of Bruyères-le-Châtel, this supercomputer, which
will start computing during mid 2005, will place the capacity of
calculation of the CEA in the first world ranks and in the European
forefront.
This supercomputer is designed by the BULL company using their
NOVASCALE servers connected by a network built by QUADRICS company. It
will be composed of 4532 INTEL Montecito processors. By using general
purpose processors and the integration of open software under LINUX, the
architecture of the machine gives access to the necessary
data-processing powers.
This computer constitutes the second step of numerical simulation
program set up in 1996. This program is intended to guarantee the
reliability and the safety of the dissuasion weapons after the final
adoption from the nuclear tests. The last step is planned for 2010 and
should lead to a computing power of several hundreds of téraflops.
