The Playstation 3 *might* possibly get, at the very most, 1 TFLOP / 1
Teraflop of peak performance. but this now seems unlikely. I think PS3
will have quite a bit LESS than 1 TFLOPs. My ballpark guess is
probably, a few hundred GFLOPs.
The PS2 is rated at 6.2 GFLOPs peak, and sustains less than that in
practice.
PS3 would be doing well if it could sustain 100 GFLOPs, IMO.
anyway, here are some articles with new Cell details:

On what do you base this speculation? I mean, they haven't released any
info at all about the technical specs of the PS3. For all anyone knows, it
could have a hundred cell chips in it. I guess we'll have a better idea in
May.
Has MS released any info about the xbox2's flops? I know it's pretty much a
Mac G5, but haven't heard much else.
One thing I'm curious about... I know one of the strengths of the Cell is
that they're supposed to work in tandem across networks... so a Cell on the
network that's not being fully utilized would lend some processing power to
another that's at full capacity to the benefit of the latter system. So if
I pick up one of these Cell-equipped Sony HDTVs and hook it up to my PS3,
will my games run at a smoother framerate or something than if attached to a
normal TV? I'm still trying to wrap my head around how that concept will
work in practice.
It's cool to read that the Cell workstations will be able to aid in
development of PS3 games. With all that extra power, developers are going
to need to work a lot more efficiently to create genuine next-gen games. If
you're talking an exponential increase in polys and in textures, you can't
create the games the same old way without putting exponentially more
man-hours into the effort. The way to counter that is better and more
efficient development tools.
