Well,

I work in Switzerland, and here's my two centimes worth. If you are a
European citizen, you no longer have to get a work permit to work
here, so that's a big advantage (before June 2004, this involved an
Everest of paperwork and sacrificing a limb or two). I work for a
small communications company and the pay is very good by European
standards. But, to show that I am not an exception, I know the CEO of
a big microelectronics company who pays his engineers CHF90,000
starting out, and up to CHF120,000 if you have a PhD, which I consider
high for a first job. He told me that these are average figures
throughout Switzerland. The other good points are the skiing in
Winter, the lovely Summers and of course the Alps. But the big
disadvantage are the BLOODY SWISS!!! Don't come here if you are
looking to party. Take a year out on Bondi Beach, and get it out of
your system. Come here to make money, and lead a sedate life.

Anyway, as you can tell I am not Swiss, I am Irish. My cocaine is good
music, good pubs and good Guinness, none of which exist in
Switzerland. If you want to work as a DSP Engineer and have a good
time in the process, try Ireland. It's the only place where having a
hangover is a valid excuse for not showing up till the afternoon. The
Economist recently voted Ireland as the best place in the world to
live (which I consider a curse, judging by previous winners) and yes,
there are a lot of DSP jobs going because of a huge government R&D
initiative. The pay is not as good as Switzerland, but it's not too
bad either (equivalent to UK, or maybe slightly less).

Cheers

"Ok, son, I'll tell you what a blowhole is for, and when I do, you'll
understand why I can never go back to seaworld"

C'mon porterboy, we're not that bad. I guess you've been looking in the
wrong places.

You've definitely looked in the wrong places. In fact, have you looked
at all?. What city are you based?

That may well appear high... but you have to keep in mind that the
costs for living are also *very* high in Switzerland...

I remember hearing an ex-pat in HK say "when my boss sent me here, and
told me the package, I wondered what I was going to do with all the
money. The first day I arrived here I found out" :-)

I think there is a rule that for every doubling of pay, the cost of
housing goes as a factor of 5.
